What is butterfly clicking?
Butterfly clicking means placing two fingers, usually your index and middle finger, on the left mouse button and tapping them alternately, like a drum roll. Each finger only has to click at a normal pace, but together they double the rate. It's less tiring than jitter clicking and keeps your hand steadier, which makes aiming easier.
Scores on this page are saved separately from the standard CPS test.
How to butterfly click
- Rest your palm on the mouse and place your index and middle fingers side by side on the left button.
- Tap with one finger, then the other, in a steady alternating rhythm. Keep the movements small, just enough to press the button.
- Start slowly and focus on even spacing. Speed comes once the rhythm is automatic.
- Practise in 5–10 second bursts and compare your personal bests over a few days.
Why some mice score much higher
Mouse switches don't make a perfectly clean contact; the contacts bounce for a few milliseconds when pressed. Mouse firmware ignores this bounce using a short "debounce" delay. Some mice have a very short debounce time, and fast alternating taps on them can register as extra clicks, which pushes butterfly scores well beyond what two fingers alone could produce. That's why butterfly results vary so much between mice, and why some servers restrict certain mice or settings.
If your mouse double-clicks when you're clicking normally, that's a fault, not a feature. Check it with the mouse double-click test.
What CPS can you expect?
When you're starting out, 10–14 CPS is common. Practised butterfly clickers often reach the high teens, and higher numbers usually depend on the mouse registering extra clicks. Your 10-second score is the most useful one to track, since it rewards rhythm over a single burst.
Is butterfly clicking allowed?
Like jitter clicking, butterfly clicking is a manual technique, so many communities treat it as a skill. Some servers cap the click rate they accept or ban mice with modified debounce settings. Rules vary, so check the server or game you play before relying on it.
Frequently asked questions
Butterfly or jitter: which is better?
Butterfly is usually faster, less tiring and easier to aim with. Jitter needs only one finger and works on more mice. Many players learn both.
Does butterfly clicking damage my mouse?
It wears switches faster simply because you click so much more. Switches are rated for millions of clicks, but heavy butterfly use can eventually cause the double-click fault mentioned above.
Can I butterfly click on a laptop trackpad?
Two-finger taps on a trackpad are usually treated as a right click, so butterfly clicking doesn't work well there. Use a mouse.
