How the typing test works

Type each word and press Space to move to the next. Letters turn white when correct and red when wrong; extra letters you add appear after the word. If you notice a mistake in the word you just finished, press Backspace on the next word to step back and fix it.

Choose a Time test (15 seconds up to 5 minutes) to see how many words you can type, or a Words test (10, 25, 50 or 100 words) to see how fast you can finish. Turn on Punctuation and Numbers for a test closer to real-world writing. Personal bests and your progress chart are kept separately for each combination.

Quote mode gives you a real sentence or passage from classic books and speeches, with natural capitals and punctuation, and shows where it's from when you finish. Pick short, medium or long. Use the language menu to practise common words in Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian or Dutch, with accents and German capitals as they are really written.

Custom lets you practise any text you like: paste an essay, code comments or a script you need to type, and the test turns it into a typing passage. It's remembered on this device, but custom scores aren't saved as personal bests, because every text is different.

Find and fix your weak keys

After every test you see a key heatmap: each letter is coloured by how often you mistyped it, and the slowest keys are listed. The test also keeps running totals of every key you type, on this device only. Turn on Weak keys (or press Practise my weak keys on your result) and the next tests are packed with words that use the letters you miss or hesitate on most. As those keys improve, the practice moves on to the next weakest ones.

Typing certificate

Finish a timed test of 1 minute or longer (outside weak-key practice) and press Get certificate to download a printable certificate with your name, speed, accuracy and the date. It's a handy record of your progress or something to attach to an application, but it's honest about what it is: a self-taken online test, not an accredited qualification.

How your score is calculated

ResultWhat it means
WPMNet words per minute: characters in correctly typed words (plus the spaces after them) divided by five, per minute. Five characters is the standard length of a "word" in typing tests.
Raw speedEvery character you typed, right or wrong, per minute. The gap between raw speed and WPM shows how much speed mistakes cost you.
AccuracyThe share of your keystrokes that were correct. Mistakes you later fixed still count, so it reflects how cleanly you type.
ConsistencyHow steady your speed was from second to second. 100% means perfectly even; bursts and pauses lower it.
CharactersCorrect / incorrect / extra / missed characters, compared letter by letter.

After each test you'll also see a speed-over-time chart and the keys you missed most often, which tells you exactly what to practise.

What is a good typing speed?

Commonly quoted averages for adults are around 40 words per minute. Here's how we label results:

Net WPMRating
Under 25Learning
25–39Average
40–54Above average
55–74Fast
75–99Very fast
100 and aboveElite

Many office and data-entry jobs ask for somewhere between 40 and 60 WPM with high accuracy. Short tests give higher numbers than long ones, so compare like with like.

Race a friend on the same words

When you finish, use Copy challenge link or Share result. The link contains the exact word sequence and settings you had, so your friend types the same words and sees the score to beat. It's a fair race without sign-ups or accounts.

How to type faster

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. Tap the words to bring up your keyboard. Turn off autocorrect if your keyboard keeps changing words. Phone scores aren't comparable with physical-keyboard scores.

Why is my WPM lower than my raw speed?

WPM only counts words you typed correctly. A word with a mistake you didn't fix adds to raw speed but not WPM.

Does my keyboard layout matter?

The test works with any layout (QWERTY, AZERTY, Dvorak and others) because it compares the characters you produce, not the keys you press. If letters come out doubled, check your keyboard with the keyboard tester.

Is there a 1, 3 or 5 minute typing test?

Yes. Choose Time, then 60 s, 3 min or 5 min. Longer tests give a more realistic speed, which is why job tests often use them.

Can I get a typing certificate?

Yes. After any timed test of 1 minute or more (not in Weak keys practice, which uses an unusual mix of words), press Get certificate, add your name and download it as an image you can print or attach. It's free and needs no account.

Can I practise my own text?

Yes. Choose Custom, paste or type your text and press Use this text.

Can I take the test in another language?

Yes: Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Dutch are in the language menu. Use a keyboard layout for that language so you can type the accented letters.

Can I paste text?

Not into the test itself: pasting there is blocked so results stay honest. To practise a text of your own, paste it into the box in Custom mode.

Is what I type stored?

Nothing is uploaded: your typing is checked in your browser. On this device only, the test saves your personal bests and progress, per-key stats for weak-key practice, your custom text and the name for your certificate. Clearing your browser's site data removes them.
