How to use the webcam test

  1. Press Start webcam test and allow access when your browser asks.
  2. If you have more than one camera, pick it from the list.
  3. Choose 720p, 1080p or 4K to ask the camera for that resolution. The test shows what it actually delivers.
  4. Check the measured frame rate and brightness, and read the result above the video.
  5. Press Test every resolution to check which resolutions your camera really supports, from 160 × 120 up to 4K, and the frame rate it manages at each one. Many webcams drop to 5–15 fps at their top resolution.
  6. Press Take photo to capture a full-resolution still and see the real image quality.
  7. Press Record 10 s video to record a short clip with sound and play it back, so you can check how you look and sound together before a call. Turn on Grid to line up your framing.

What the results mean

ResultWhat it tells you
ResolutionThe size of the video the camera is really sending, not the number on the box. If it's lower than you asked for, the camera or browser doesn't support that resolution.
Frame rate (measured)How many new frames reach the browser each second. 30 fps is standard for calls; 60 fps looks smoother. The number the camera reports is shown underneath for comparison.
BrightnessThe average brightness of the picture. Too dark looks grainy and lowers the frame rate; too bright washes out your face.
Camera detailsThe maximum resolution and frame rate range the camera reports, and which settings (zoom, focus, exposure) your browser can control.

The preview is mirrored by default, like looking in a mirror. Other people see you the right way round, and test photos are saved un-mirrored.

Webcam not working? Try these fixes

  1. Open the privacy shutter. Many laptops and webcams have a physical slider or a function key (often F8 or F10) that disables the camera. A black picture usually means it's closed.
  2. Allow access in the browser. Click the icon to the left of the web address and set Camera to Allow, then reload.
  3. Allow access in your system. On Windows, open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera. On macOS, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and enable your browser.
  4. Close other apps. On Windows especially, only one app can use the camera at a time. Close Zoom, Teams, Discord, OBS and other browser tabs that might be using it.
  5. Reconnect and update. Unplug and replug the camera, try another USB port, and install any driver or firmware updates from the manufacturer.

Frequently asked questions

Is my video recorded or uploaded?

No. The video is shown in your browser only. Photos you take stay on your device unless you download them.

Why is my frame rate lower than 30 fps?

Most webcams lower their frame rate in dim light to take brighter pictures. Add light in front of you. A slow USB port or a busy computer can also limit it.

Why can't I get 4K or 1080p?

The camera may not support it, it may be connected to a slower USB port, or the browser may limit it. Check "Maximum resolution" in the camera details.

Does it work with phone cameras?

Yes. Open the page on your phone and allow camera access; choose between the front and back cameras from the list.

How do I test my microphone?

Use the mic test.
