Two tests in one
- Double-click speed times the gap between the two clicks of each double click, ten times, and gives you the average. Lower is faster.
- Faulty mouse check is for a mouse that seems to double-click on its own. Click once at a time; if a single click ever registers as two, the test flags it.
How fast is a good double click?
Most people's quick double clicks land somewhere between about 100 and 200 ms from the first click to the second. These are the bands this test uses for your average:
| Average gap | Rating |
|---|---|
| 90 ms or less | Lightning fast |
| 91–120 ms | Very fast |
| 121–160 ms | Fast |
| 161–220 ms | Average |
| Over 220 ms | Relaxed |
Two clicks more than 500 ms apart don't count as a double click here, matching the default double-click speed in Windows. Anything under 50 ms is faster than a finger can press twice, so it isn't counted: it usually means the mouse bounced.
Why does my mouse double-click when I click once?
Inside the button is a small switch with metal contacts. As it wears or gets dirty, the contacts can bounce, so one press turns into two clicks a few milliseconds apart. You notice it as files opening when you meant to select them, or a dragged window dropping halfway. The faulty mouse check catches this by flagging any new press less than 50 ms after you let go. No finger is that fast.
To check every button, including right, middle and the side buttons, use the mouse test.
How to fix a mouse that double clicks
- Check Windows first. In Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings, make sure the double-click speed slider isn't at an extreme and ClickLock is off.
- Raise the debounce time in your mouse's software if it has the setting. A slightly longer debounce filters out the bounce.
- Clean the button. Unplug the mouse and blow short bursts of compressed air around the button edges while clicking it.
- Update the firmware through the manufacturer's app. Some mice have had double-click problems fixed this way.
- Use the warranty. Double-clicking is a well-known switch fault and is often covered. A screenshot of the result here helps.
- Replace the switch, if you can solder, or choose a mouse with optical switches next time. They don't have contacts that bounce.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change my double-click speed?
Yes. On Windows, go to Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings and move the double-click speed slider. On a Mac, it's under System Settings → Accessibility → Pointer Control.
Does double-click speed matter in games?
In a few. Some games use double clicks for quick actions, and a fast, consistent double click helps in click-speed challenges. For overall clicking speed, try the CPS test.
Does it work on a phone?
The speed test works with double taps. The faulty mouse check needs a mouse.
