How to connect a DualShock 4 to your computer
- With a cable: plug it in with a micro-USB cable that carries data. Many old phone cables only charge, so try another if nothing happens.
- With Bluetooth: hold the Share button and the PS button together until the light bar flashes quickly. Then add it in your computer's Bluetooth settings, where it appears as "Wireless Controller".
- Press any button with this page open. Browsers only show a controller after you press something.
Chrome and Edge show the DualShock 4 with all its buttons named. If you see numbered buttons, try one of those browsers.
What this test checks on a DualShock 4
- All buttons: Cross, Circle, Square, Triangle, the D-pad, L1, R1, L3, R3, Share, Options, the PS button and the touchpad click.
- L2 and R2: the bars fill as you press. Worn triggers sometimes stop short of 100% or stick above 0%.
- Both sticks and a three-second stick drift check.
- Vibration, where your browser supports it.
Browsers can't reach the light bar, the motion sensors, the speaker or the headphone jack, so those need a PS4.
DualShock 4 stick drift
The DualShock 4 has been around since 2013, and on older controllers the sticks are often worn. The drift check measures how far each stick sits from the centre while you leave it alone:
| Resting offset | Result |
|---|---|
| Below 0.05 | No drift. The stick returns cleanly to centre. |
| 0.05–0.12 | Slight offset. Most games hide this with a deadzone. |
| 0.12 or more | Drift. Likely noticeable in games with small deadzones. |
How to fix a DualShock 4
- Reset it. Turn off your PS4, then press the small reset button in the hole on the back of the controller, near L2, with a pin for about five seconds. Reconnect it with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Raise the deadzone in the game to hide a small offset.
- Clean around the sticks by rotating them in wide circles with short bursts of compressed air around the base.
- Replace the stick module. Replacement thumbstick modules are cheap, but fitting them needs soldering, so it's a job for a repair shop unless you're comfortable with that.

Frequently asked questions
Can I test a PS4 controller without a PS4?
Yes. Connect it to a computer or many phones with a cable or Bluetooth, open this page and press a button.
My DualShock 4 shows up as an Xbox controller. Why?
Apps such as DS4Windows create a virtual Xbox controller so older games work. The test still works; close the app if you want the PlayStation button names.
Why is my controller not detected?
Press a button while this page is in front, try a data-capable micro-USB cable, and re-pair over Bluetooth if needed. A flashing light bar that never goes solid means it isn't paired yet.
Does it work for a PS5 controller too?
Yes. Any controller works here, and there's a page with DualSense tips: the PS5 controller tester.
